180 Degree Rule

In this video it describes the 180 degree rule and what happens if you cross this very important line of filming! The main thing to remember is that the film will look increasingly confusing to the audience every time this rule is broken as the characters keep changing sides of the frame.

 

In the first picture it is a insulation of the 180 degree rule. It shows that a line is drawn between to 2 people face to face. The camera can only be on one side of the 2 people because if the camera switches sides then the person that is on the left suddenly switches to the right.  

 

In picture 2 you can see what happens when the rule is broken. Top left of the picture the woman is walking from left to right. In the bottom left picture you can see the camera angle has changed but is still using the 180 degree rule but the picture on the right the camera is on the opposite side to the original shot therefore it now looks as if she is walking towards herself.
