Messing around with the lighting

The colour of the lighting is important because it can create a lot of different moods and also depends on what atmosphere we are trying to create

Isaac - GarageBand, foley sound

I experimented with lots of different types of foley sounds such as the footsteps. I went for a deeper frequency sounding footstep due to the given circumstances of the ground and also the mood of the thriller. Sounds such as the glass smashing were all layered with more than one sound effect to give more of a depth of sound. For the bullets I increased the sound to enhance the action and get the audience on the edge of their seats. Overall I'm pleased with the outcome.

Isaac - White Balance

In our prelim task, for some shots inside the dark room we forgot to use White Balance. This decreased the image quality and gave it a grainy effect. However the unsaturated look gave the effect we intended.

I took some pictures to show 'before and after' the use of white balance. This was the outcome:

Isaac - location research

Whilst watching the program 'Sherlock', i came across this location which suited the theme, put forward by our task. It is isolated and gives off a chilling and creepy sensation.

Location location location

I found these pictures of an abandoned house which could be a gripping location for our thriller film.
This could be used but may need quite a bit of lighting as well as props to emphasise the scary nature of the place.

Our Final Prelim Product

WE FINISHED!!!!

Adding Music During Editing

When we were looking for sound clips to add into our short film, we used this website:

http://www.jeadigitalmedia.org/2012/07/06/royalty-free-music-for-video-production/

It gives you links to legal soundtrack and other sound effects to use on Final Cut Pro.

The Editing Process

Now we've completed filming all of our footage, we now have to edit our 1 minute short film. By using 'Final Cut Pro' we have put our clips together as well as adding music and other effects, such as transitions, to enforce the genre of horror and pull the whole film together.

Third day of shooting (15th January)

On our third day of shooting we only had an hour lesson so we were short for time and needed to get the rest of the filming finished. We finally found a dark room where we could film in the college, the 'prayer room'. It was dark enough and had tables and chairs already available for us to use. We were also able to hang the 'swinging light bulb' from the ceiling as one of our props.

We came up with dialogue on the day, we were pretty pleased with what the group came up with. We were aiming for something short, but dramatic. We had a bit of trouble with the lighting. Our intention was to use the light bulb as our main light source and then use LED lights as additional lighting to create shadows. The light bulb ending up being to bright. So we used 2 LED lights instead, one on the ceiling, replacing the light bulb (but still having it as a prop) and then the extra LED for shadowing.

Over all we completed all of our filming, we were very pleased with the finished result of our footage and created the 'dramatic' 'horror' effect we wanted.

Isaac - Storyboard

Trouble Shooting (9th Janurary)

On our second day of shooting we were going to do all the main indoor shots and dialogue. Once we had taken out the equipment (video camera, digital camera, tri-pod, single hanging bulb and LED) we then headed to the POD room where we had planned to film.

Turns out both PODs were taken by practicing students. We then had to search the college for an alternate room to film in. Everywhere we had looked, the room was either too light or had too much equipment in for us to film. For example, our media room had too many computers that we couldn't move in the background of the shots, as you can see in the images below.

(in the media room setting up lighting)

After testing with different locations, we decided to wait until the POD's were free for us to film. Two people from the group went to check whilst the other two stayed behind to finish off some blog work. In the end we came to an agreement that we would continue filming of Wednesday when the POD's are available and when we have our media lesson.

Video of Isaac Filming

for our CCTV camera scene, Isaac and Tom were so far away from each other that they had to contact via phoning whilst filming. this is a video of it.

First Day of Filming

On our first day of filming we decided to do our outdoor shots first. As the weather conditions were perfect for filming. It was an overcast day and looked very gloomy on camera. This added to the mysterious theme.

Here are the shots of the container:

We then began to shoot the opening door shots:

Then we shot the characters approaching the container
We did this using different angles and experimenting with the location:

We then did then filmed some tracking shots of the
 characters approaching the container:

Risk assessment: Whilst Isaac was filming we made sure he was safe. For example, when he was climbing onto the container we were there, just in case he fell. Also when he was in the hedge we assessed the branches to make sure he wouldn't get injured.
Overall the first day of filming went well and we were
all pleased with the shots and progress we had made!
